The Worries Everyone Has

Before they start, almost every student we have ever trained has had at least one of these thoughts. Probably more than one. You are not unusual for having them, and you are not alone in them. Here is what we hear most often, and an honest response to each.

“I am not clever enough.”

This is the most common one by far. The Level 5 Diploma is a genuine qualification and the academic work is real, but it is not beyond someone who applies themselves. The course builds gradually and you will not be left to figure things out alone. Many of our most successful graduates came in convinced they were not academic people. They were wrong.

“I am not sure I can keep up with the written work.”

Academic writing is a skill, and like any skill it develops with practice. The early assignments are structured to ease you in, and feedback is given to help you improve rather than simply to grade you. By the end of year one most students are genuinely surprised by what they can produce. The online library, tutor video recaps, and PowerPoint notes are all there to support you between sessions.

“I worry I am too old.”

Our students range from their early twenties to their late fifties and beyond. Age is not a disadvantage in counselling training. If anything the opposite is true. Life experience brings a depth of insight that enriches the whole group, and many of our students describe the course as something they wish they had found sooner but are glad they found when they did. As one of our graduates put it, this is their third act, and it is the best one yet.

“I am worried it will bring up things I am not ready for.”

This is a thoughtful concern and worth taking seriously. Counselling training does involve personal reflection and some of that can stir things up. That is part of the process and it is managed carefully. Students are supported throughout, and personal therapy is a recommended part of the journey. If you have significant unresolved trauma it is worth having a conversation with us before you enrol. We would rather have that conversation early than not at all.

“What if I start and cannot finish?”

Life happens, and we understand that. Most students who find it difficult to complete do so because of circumstances that changed rather than because the work was too hard. The best protection against this is being honest with yourself at the start about your capacity and your support network. That is exactly what the later part of this course helps you think through, so you can go in with your eyes open.

“I do not know enough about counselling to train as a counsellor.”

You are not supposed to. That is what the training is for. We do not expect you to arrive with prior knowledge of counselling theory or practice. We expect you to arrive with an open mind, a genuine interest in people, and a willingness to reflect on your own experience. Everything else we will teach you.

If you recognised yourself in any of those, you are in good company. The fact that you are asking the questions is usually a sign that you are approaching this thoughtfully, which is exactly the kind of person this training is designed for.

“Almost felt like a little bit meant to be. I remember the first class and just being so nervous, and everyone was so welcoming. I feel like I’ve grown so much and learned so much. This is the springboard and I’m so excited about what’s coming next.”

Activity – Watch and Take Your First Note

Writing instructor and coach Candice Neveu spent over 15 years teaching adult learners returning to education. Her talk gets to the heart of something that most returning students discover too late: the thing holding them back is rarely their ability. It is their mindset.

As you watch, if something resonates or you want to capture a thought, try using the Notes tab at the top of this page, next to Overview and Comments. On the main diploma course students use this to take notes during and after sessions, keeping everything neatly in one place alongside their lesson content. This is a good moment to try it for the first time. Your notes are private and only visible to you.
