What is clinical supervision and why does it matter?

You may have seen it on television. If you have ever watched Frasier, The Sopranos, or In Treatment, you will have seen it in action. A therapist sitting down with another therapist to talk through their work. That is supervision. It is not therapy for the therapist, but it is the closest professional equivalent. It is a formal, structured session with a qualified and experienced supervisor where you bring your client work, reflect on what is happening in the therapeutic relationship, and receive honest professional challenge and support.

When we work closely with people through difficult and often painful experiences, it is easy to lose perspective. We can become too close to a case, take on more than we realise, or carry things home without noticing. This is known as countertransference, and every therapist experiences it. A good supervisor helps you recognise it, stay grounded, and ensure your practice remains safe and ethical for the people in your care.

Supervision also serves a bigger purpose. It protects your clients by ensuring their care is being reviewed by a senior professional. It develops your clinical skills by helping you understand theory more deeply and work more confidently with complex situations. And it protects you, because this work is not without its challenges. A skilled supervisor will often notice, before you do yourself, when you need to slow down.

Organisations such as the BACP and UKCP make supervision a mandatory requirement for ethical practice. It is not something you do once and move on from. It is something every good therapist continues throughout their career, because the best practitioners never stop reflecting on their work.

Sessions typically cost £50 each. Your certificate entitles you to your first one completely free of charge.

Once you have completed all lessons you will see a green tick next to each one in the course menu. When all ticks are showing, click the button below and then click View Certificate.

To save your certificate on a Mac: Click Print, then click the PDF button in the bottom left corner and select Save as PDF.

To save your certificate on Windows: Click Print, then under Printer select Microsoft Print to PDF and click Print to save it as a file.

Keep your certificate somewhere safe. When the time comes to claim your free supervision session, present it to your tutor and they will scan it to redeem it. It is valid for one use only.

What your certificate entitles you to

Your certificate of completion entitles you to one free clinical supervision session, worth £50, redeemable once you have qualified and begun your placement hours working with real clients.

As part of the diploma, students are required to complete a set number of placement hours. Clinical supervision is a mandatory part of that process and an ethical requirement set by professional bodies including the BACP and UKCP. It is also something you will continue throughout your professional career, because the best therapists never stop reflecting on their practice.

Sessions typically cost £50 per session. Your certificate entitles you to one of those sessions completely free of charge.

Terms and conditions

You must have trained with UK Therapy Guild Academy. This offer is for our students only. Your placement does not need to be with us, but your training must have been completed through our academy.

This certificate is redeemable once you have begun your placement hours. It cannot be claimed before you have qualified and started working with clients in a placement setting.

One redemption only. Present your certificate to your tutor at your first supervision booking and they will scan it to redeem it. Once scanned it cannot be used again.

This offer cannot be exchanged for cash or any other service. It entitles you to one supervision session only and holds no monetary value outside of that redemption.
